Remarks Distinguished on many occasions for his coolness and gallantry in action. The only son of Mungo and Mary he left Geddes Public School at 15 to become an apprentice weaver in Dunfermline. Married a Culross girl Elizabeth Haig in 1848 and had 5 children - Sarah, Eliza, Robina, Ferguson and McGregor. Died at his home named Lucknow Villa in Culross. His grave was re-dedicated with a new granite headstone. Displayed courage, coolness and discipline to all who witnessed it. Later achieved rank of Hon. Lieutenant. Rescued a wounded officer. Rescued a severely wounded Captain of his Regiment.
