ANNAN WAR
MEMORIAL
In Memory Of The Men Of The Burgh And
Parish
Who Fell In The Great
War
1914 - 1918
December 1921, in the presence of a
gathering of 4,000 people the magnificent memorial which has been set up by the
inhabitants of the burgh and parish of Annan to commemorate the names of the
gallant men [206] of the district who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great
War, was unveiled by Lieutenant-General Sir Francis Davies, K.C.B., K.C.M.G.,
Commander-in-Chief of the Forces in Scotland.
The names of the heroes are inscribed on the four sides of the pedestal, and
they are given in raised lead letters. At the bottom of the names on the four
sides of the pedestal are the appropriate
quotations:
"Glorious their fate."
"Splendid their
doom."
"Honour them and weep not."
"Give them praise, not
pity."
The sculptor is the noted London artist, Mr
Henry Price, and the contract for the pedestal and the rest of the work was
entrusted to Messrs J. Rae & Sons, Annan. Mr Evan Tweedie acted as clerk of
works, and superintended the erection of the monument on behalf of the Memorial
Committee. The memorial cost £1,700 and the funds subscribed by the public
proved adequate for the purpose. The names of the fallen were read by Captain W.
Cuthbertson MC and Captain J. MacDonald.
